After lunch, it's time for Mrs. Amberg to give the living room a final touch. She's got guests coming for dinner tonight! Then off to the garage to see about the car - and a trip downtown with the children after picking Peter up from school. I love her spectator pumps and the striped awnings over the windows looking out on the backyard...

Jane Amberg conferring w. mechanic at gas station about the car she uses to chauffeur her husband to & from his office & get the children back & forth to school.

Jane Amberg rapping admonishingly on window in bkgrd. as she oversees her kids Peter, 7, climbing slide ladder while Tony, 5, blocks the slide & Pamela gets kicked out of tent while playing w. neighbor children in backyard playground.

is that a portrait of Abraham Lincoln on their wall? i know that's exactly what would take pride of place on my wall... if i were american that is...
I took another look at a higher-res and it's not President Lincoln - but looks a lot like him! Same mustacheless-beard thing goin' on. He must have been an ancestor of the Ambergs.
Your comment reminds me that many working class American families once used to hang a picture of the president in their living rooms. JFK was probably the last in that line.
I think u may see a resurgance in that tradition, how many obama pics do u think will start selling? A cute tradition, I think, if we can become an America again that IS proud of itself for a change, non?
What freedom the 40s gave women, that she should get to keep the car after driving her husband to work, that must have seemed insane to her grandmother at the time and even her mother.
Heck, her mother and grandmother had probably never even learned how to drive! Of course, Mrs. Amberg may not have been able to do very much with the car once gas was rationed. She'd probably be back to running her errands on foot whenever possible.
The president-elect's picture is certainly finding its way onto lots of T-shirts...
