It's like Christmas every day here at Casa Jitterbug!
Putting my hair up in curlers totally makes me feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. I'm still very new at this, so I'm never quite sure how the curls are going to come out. It's kind of exciting --- waiting with anticipation while the hair dries. I have to remind myself to be patient. Though the hair on the top of my head dries pretty quickly, the hair on the bottom takes a bit longer. When it's finally time to take the curlers out, it feels like I'm unwrapping a present I didn't even have a chance to shake beforehand.
When I began taking nightly baths the week before last, I was psyched to have the chance to work a "wet set" into my schedule. So after looking about to see what's out there, I picked out a set of self-holding rollers by Scunci. They're wrapped in a material kind of like the prickly side of a piece of Velcro. My hair is very fine, so the last thing I need is to lose any strands unnecessarily in clips or pins.

What I'd forgotten is that you can't sleep on curlers like these! Sponge curlers, maybe. Maybe even rag curls or pin curls. I gave it a good try the first night I took a bath, but it definitely wasn't going to work. Back to the bathroom. Took out all the curlers and resolved to re-wet my hair in the morning and try it again. And that's how I've worked it into my schedule ever since. When I get up in the morning, I duck my head under the shower to get my hair good and wet again. Then up in the curlers so it can dry while I go about my morning chores. Just about the time I finish my breakfast, the hair is dry and ready to unroll and style. A little hairspray, and my style holds for the better part of the day. It's usually a bit looser late afternoon/early evening, but still pretty curly. Hey, if I brushed it a bit more and pinned up the sides, I might even be able to pull off that pageboy I was picturing about a month ago.
I haven't tried using any setting lotion or other product before curling the hair, but suspect the style would hold even longer if I did so. Any recommendations for product that'll make curls a little more glossy, but still natural-looking? I suppose the right setting lotion would've been super important was I truly a '40s gal and washed and set my hair only once a week...
Also - I'm a complete dolt when it comes to rolling my hair. My bangs definitely need the smallest curlers, but what about the rest of the hair? I'm not really shooting for a tightly curled look, so is it best to use the biggest curlers on the top of my head with medium curlers at ear level and small curlers at the bottom? Or am I going about this backwards? I don't want to end up with triangle head. And should the curlers be rolled into place horizontally or vertically?

Ummm everyone's hair is different. You might want to experiment on Saturdays to see what works best for you. Personally, I can't use setting gel/lotion/spray of any kind. Besides making my head sore, it makes my hair sticky and look greasy. I guess what I'm saying is see if people will let you try some of their styling lotion/gel or just buy some samples until you find what works for you. Have fun trying new things. :)
It is so much fun to play in the beauty supplies. I set my hair too. Sometimes in a wet set, and sometimes in sponge curlers( and my husband doesn't mind) When I was a girl my mom made me set my hair every night. She set her own hair in pins every night.I think you just have to practice. I bet you looked cute in church today.Sing unto the Lord.I went to a beauty supply store and asked for "Dippity Do" and they thought I was crazy. I remember my older sisters used it.
Ha, ha. I still have some of my grandma's Dippity-Do! It works the best of all I've ever tried. You might still be able to find it at WalMart or K-Mart or variety type drug stores.
Yes, me too and dipity -do! I have looked every where and can not find it. The nearest thing I found was a style gel in a bottle, also pink in color cheap also. Although I remember the do also came in green-blue, any way the cheap stuff works great use spareingly. I sleep on sponge rollers ever other night or so.
There are a ton of 'how to' videos on YouTube. That is how I learned how to roll my hair. Just search for 'vintage hair' or 'retro hair' or 'pinup hair'. As for a setting lotion I either use Lottabody (purple) found at Sally's Beauty Supply or Paul Mitchell Quick Slip. The Paul Mitchell works best for me, but I have super straight, thin, hair. Most people swear by the Lottabody. I have heard beer works, but I keep forgetting to try it.
Thanks doll,

I can't seem to get curlers to stick in my hair, it's just too darn thick.
I have been reading your blog for quite some time. I have enjoyed it! I had to comment today because you brought back so many memories of pink foam curlers on Saturday night's before church.
I also came across a new blog, thanks to a friend, all about homemaking. Thought you and your readers might be interested!

This might help you...

I have fine hair, and haven't had any problems sleeping in pink sponge curlers or pin curls. the pin curls are easier to sleep on. If you sleep on the curlers, it works better to have a satin cap. I made a mob cap (my husband laughed, but it works wonderfully)
And if you can find "1940s Hairstyles" by Daniela Turudich. Its a big help with setting diagrams for pin curls and such....
If you email joeireedhats (http://joeireedhats.livejournal.com/tag/hairstyles) on Live Journal they'll send it to you. The link I had for on-line pdf is gone.
good luck with your journey!

Pin curls are far less damaging to fine hair than those velcro curlers and easy to sleep in.
Packrat, Saturday is definitely the best time for experimenting! I like the idea of trying out some products in sample size.
Mrs. Tailleur, et al, I used to use Dippity Do in high school! I had a perm in those days and used Dippity Do to get that terrible winged look. Ack! I'm making myself cringe. I probably overused it, as my hair ended up kind of crunchy. That and Aqua Net - an '80s gal's best friends...
TGH, thank you for the recommendations!
Amy, I'm jealous... What I wouldn't give for a thick head of hair!
J.A., you gotta love those pink sponge curlers! They were a tradition when I was a girl, too. Especially on the night before special events, like picture-taking day at school. I'll be sure to check out that blog.
j3nny, boy, does that girl have a lovely head of hair! Thanks for posting that link.
aurelia, pin curls would be fine for me if they didn't come along with pins. I might as well yank a hunk of hair out of my head as try to use bobby pins. Rag curls would probably be the best option of all.
